Barrus Shire / Shanks

The Barrus Shire engines are Yanmar based engine which has excellent reliability and long life. These engines are plant engines and designed to work in harsh environments. I know of several in boats that have over 8000hrs without any major work done.

Occasionally you will hear about the Barrus Shanks engines,
The "Shanks" engine was launched by Barrus some years back, as an alternative to their Shire range.
It was based on a Chinese engine, and was a lot cheaper than any competition at the time.
There was a lot of early flourish about the engine, mainly due to the price.

Models included: 30, 30H,35, 35H, 40, AND 45H.

Check out the PDF section for the Shanks Manual.
The shire range of engines are a direct injection therefore doesn't need glow plugs. there is however a cold start device in the injection pump that increases the fuel slightly and advances the timing a bit.
You
may well find it smokes a grey/white colour a little on idle when starting, because the mix in the combustion chamber may not be strong enough to fully mix the fuel droplets with the air.
One of its weaknesses seams to be the VDO counter
